8th November 2022, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) hosted an Expert Mission to Evaluate Regulatory Capacity Building System, conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The goal of the two-week expert mission was to assess FANR's implementation of capacity building, including education and training, human resources, knowledge management, and knowledge networks.

The mission visited FANR's headquarters in Abu Dhabi, where they were briefed on the regulator's capacity building goals, training and development programmes, and knowledge management activities.

Since its inception in 2009, FANR has been committed to building capacity among Emiratis in the UAE's nuclear and radiological sectors. To date, FANR has qualified over 50 Emirati inspectors in nuclear safety, radiation safety, safeguards, and nuclear security, and Emiratis comprise more than 73% of the regulator's workforce.

Upon request by IAEA Member States, the IAEA conducts specialized missions to review countries' efforts to develop capacity in fields relating to nuclear energy, nuclear safety, and capacity building, among other technical aspects.
