FANR Board of Management Reviews Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Progress; recognizes its winners of Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Award

7 February 2019 Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The Board of Management of the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) convened its first meeting for 2019, where it reviewed FANR's performance and achievements in 2018 according to its Strategic and Operational Plans as the authority aims to ensure the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear and radiation activities in the UAE.

Members of the Board also honoured two of FANR's staff who won last month the prestigious Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Awards. The winners are FANR's Dr. Waddah Al Hanai, Senior Specialist, Site Suitability, who won the Specialized Job category; and Mohamed Al Harbi, Specialist, Resident Inspection, who won the Field Job category.  The Board of Management reiterated its commitment to excellence as it constitutes a core value of FANR. It stressed importance to empower Emiratis and equip them with knowledge and expertise to contribute to the nuclear industry.

During the meeting, the Board learned about latest updates of the FANR ongoing review of the Operating License Application for Units 1 and 2 at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Al Dhafra as well as all relevant inspection activities to ensure implementation of FANR's safety, security and safeguards requirements. Reviewing the Operating License Application of Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is a key priority for FANR's Board of Management to ensure that it meets all regulatory requirements.

The Board of Management approved the formation of FANR's Happiness and Wellbeing Council. The Council, to be chaired by FANR's Director-General and membership of its directors, will have a mandate to develop regulations, policies and initiatives that will support the National Wellbeing Framework.
