History of FANR

The principles laid out in the Policy of the United Arab Emirates on the Evaluation and Potential Development of Peaceful Nuclear Energy  reviewed the various power generation options open to the UAE and concluded that the construction and operation of civilian nuclear power plants offered the best path forward to ensuring continued economic growth and national security.

In September 2009, the UAE President, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan approved Federal Law by Decree No 6 of 2009, Concerning the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, which establishes the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) as the UAE's nuclear regulatory body.
